Cloves

Cloves have a bold, comforting presence — tiny dried flower buds that carry an aroma far bigger than their size. Warm, spicy, and slightly sweet, they feel like the essence of winter kitchens and festive gatherings, yet they also hold a deep earthiness that speaks of tropical breezes and sunsoaked soil. There’s something wonderfully grounding about them, as if each bud contains a little spark of warmth waiting to be released.
Their story begins in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, once known as the Spice Islands, where clove trees grew wild and were treasured long before global trade existed. For centuries, cloves were so valuable that entire empires fought for control of their production. They travelled along ancient trade routes to China, India, the Middle East, and eventually Europe, becoming prized not only for their flavour but for their aromatic and ceremonial uses. In some cultures, people planted clove trees to mark the birth of a child — a living symbol of hope and prosperity.
Each bud is actually an unopened flower, harvested just before it blooms. When you drop a clove into water, a good one will float vertically — a traditional way of testing freshness. They’re also one of the few spices that contain natural essential oils so potent that the scent lingers long after the bud is gone. And despite their strong flavour, the trees themselves are elegant and evergreen, with glossy leaves and clusters of pinkish buds.
People often enjoy cloves for the sense of warmth and comfort they bring. Their rich, spicy aroma can make a blend feel cosy, soothing, and deeply grounding — especially during colder months or quiet evening moments. They pair beautifully with cinnamon, star anise, cardamom, ginger, rooibos, and black tea, adding depth and a gentle sweetness that rounds out a blend.
Cloves are naturally potent, so they’re best enjoyed in moderation. They may not be suitable for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing certain health conditions, or taking regular medication. Some people may experience sensitivity if consuming large amounts. As always, anyone with specific concerns should check with a healthcare professional before using them regularly.
